In 2017 JDA achieved planning permission on behalf of the Client for six glamping pods in the grounds of the Grade II Listed Charlton House Hotel. Set in the heart of the Somerset Mendips, the hotel and spa has a reputation as one of the leading country house hotels in the South West of England.
The proposed glamping pods will be used as additional Hotel accommodation, complementary to the existing Charlton House Hotel and Spa facility.
The Pods each comprise a gross external floor area of around 17.7m2 arranged at ground floor level. The layout of the Pods is set out to allow south or south-west facing entrances. The entrances are the only glazed areas on the Pods and therefore the layout allows sunlight to enter the Pods giving heating benefits from solar gain, particularly in winter, and increased light benefits.
The layout of the pods also allows views out of the glazed entrance doors towards the mature planted hotel grounds southern boundary with filtered views to the fields beyond.
JDA worked closely with the pod manufacturer throughout the design process including a visit to their factory to inspect construction
